Metallosis

Definition:

  • Condition due to deposition of metallic debris in surrounding tissues.
  • Caused by implants or prosthetic devices.

Mechanism:

  • Implant loosening or mechanical wearMetal components rub against each other → Wear and corrosion of metallic implants → Leads to release of metal particles into adjacent tissues → Inflammatory Response → Leads to formation of foreign body giant cells.

Histopathology:

  • Presence of metal particles.
  • Foreign body giant cells present.
  • Metallic debris seen in tissue.

Common Sites:

  • Occurs in various joint replacements.
  • Example: Total knee replacements.
